Designing for consent, not around it
Consent-aware analytics is a design constraint. Treated early, it costs almost nothing; treated late, it costs the data.

The default is wrong
Most sites load measurement scripts first and ask permission second. Under EU rules, non-essential cookies and similar technologies require consent before they are set — not after the page has already reported the visit.
Build the gate first
A consent layer should be part of the initial architecture: categories defined, storage decided, and every tag registered against a category. Adding a tool later becomes a configuration change rather than a rebuild.
What you keep without consent
Server-side request logs, aggregate revenue, conversion counts in your own database and qualitative feedback are all still available. The loss is narrower than teams expect once they map what they actually use.
Make withdrawal easy
A persistent settings link and a preference centre that genuinely re-runs the decision are not just compliance details — they are the difference between a system users trust and a banner they click away.
